Apple Announces New Products Including the iPhone 15 Series – Brighter Displays, Thinner Bezels, Larger Batteries and Improved Cameras

Apple announced several new products during its Wonderlust event on Tuesday, September 12th. Apple announced the Watch Series 9, Watch Ultra 2 and the iPhone 15 series.

Let’s start with the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2.

The Apple Watch Series 9 uses a 1.57” LTPO OLED display from LGD and a 1.78” LTPO display from JDI and LGD. Per Apple, the S9 SIP has 5.6B transistors, a GPU that is rated to be up to 30% faster than the S8 chipset on the Apple Watch Series 8 and a new 4-core Neural Engine with up to twice the speed of the S8 chipset. In addition to the new chipset, the Apple Watch Series 9 has some new features. One of those features includes Double Tap. The Double Tap feature allows you to control the watch with just one hand using your index finger and your thumb. Double Tap lets you touch your thumb and index finger together to answer and hang up a phone call and to scroll, tap and navigate the UI. The new Find My app has been upgraded to use a new ultra-wide band chip that provides the same degree of precision similar to an Apple AirTag. Apple also noted that as part of their 2030 plan to be carbon neutral, the Apple Watch Series 9 is the very first carbon neutral product.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 uses a 1.93” LTPO OLED display from LGD. The Watch Ultra 2 also uses the new S9 SIP chipset. The 49mm Apple Watch Ultra 2 is priced at $799 and can be preordered starting September 12th and becomes available on September 22nd. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 has a peak outdoor brightness of 3000 nits (the Watch Ultra was rated at 2000 nits). The Watch Ultra 2 is rated for 36 hours of battery life or 72 hours in low power mode. This smartwatch has ratings such as WR100, MIL-STD 810 and EN 13319 that reflect the ability for the smartwatch to handle the harshest environments.

The iPhone 15 series has four models as listed in our table in this article, the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The iPhone 15 uses a 6.12” LTPS flexible OLED display from SDC and BOE (the iPhone 14 uses a 6.06” LTPS flexible OLED display from SDC, LGD and BOE). The iPhone 15 Plus uses a 6.69” LTPS flexible OLED display from SDC and BOE (the iPhone 14 Plus uses a 6.68” LTPS flexible OLED display from SDC). The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have a resolution of 2556 x 1179 and 2796 x 1290 respectively, a 60Hz refresh rate, and use the 4nm A16 Bionic chipset with a 5-core GPU. Both models also adopt USB-C versus the lightening connector. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus also have 6GB RAM (versus 4GB RAM for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus)

Although the battery capacity specifications were not mentioned for the iPhone 15, the specifications note the similar hours for audio and video playback when compared to the iPhone 14. The iPhone 15 notes up to 20 hours of video playback, up to 16 hours of streamed video playback and 80 hours of audio playback. The iPhone 14 has a battery capacity of 3,279mAh and we show the iPhone 15 with a battery capacity of 3,877mAh in the table below. For the iPhone 15 Plus, the specifications note 26 hours of video playback, 20 hours of streamed video playback and 100 hours of audio playback. The iPhone 14 Plus has a battery capacity of 4,325mAh and we show the iPhone 15 Plus with a battery capacity of 4,912mAh in the table below.

The camera improvements and the adoption of the Dynamic Island versus a notch were the highlights for the upgrades to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have a new 48MP rear wide camera (the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have a 48MP rear wide camera). The 48MP rear wide camera has a f/1.6 aperture using 2.0μm quad pixels (the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max have a 48MP rear wide camera with a f/1.6 aperture using 1.78μm pixels). The front camera on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus is a 12MP camera with a f/1.9 aperture (the same as in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus). The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have also increased the typical and peak outdoor brightness. The typical brightness is 1000 nits (versus 800 nits for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus). The peak outdoor brightness is 2000 nits (versus 1200 nits for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus). The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus comes with Roadside Assistance via satellite.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max use a Grade 5 Titanium housing which decreases the weight to 6.6oz (187g) for the iPhone 15 Pro and 7.91oz (221g) for the iPhone 15 Pro Max (versus 206g for the iPhone 14 Pro and 240g for the iPhone 14 Pro Max). The 15 Pro models also have thinner bezels that use a process called LIPO (low-injection pressure over-molding). The 1.55mm bezels are almost 30% smaller than the bezels on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max which are 2.17mm. Both models also adopt USB-C versus the lightening connector. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus also have 8GB RAM (versus 6GB RAM for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max).

The rear cameras have also been upgraded. The upgrades enable the equivalent of seven pro lenses with incredible image quality, including a more advanced 48MP Main camera system that now supports the new super-high-resolution 24MP default, the next generation of portraits with Focus and Depth Control, improvements to Night mode and Smart HDR, and an all-new 5X Telephoto camera exclusively on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The new USB‑C connector is supercharged with USB 3 speeds — up to 20X faster than USB 2. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max also come with Roadside Assistance via satellite. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have also increased the peak outdoor brightness. The peak outdoor brightness is 2000 nits (versus 1600 nits for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max). The all-new Action button replaces the single-function switch used to toggle between ring and silent, offering additional options so users can choose between quickly accessing the camera or flashlight; activating Voice Memos, Focus modes, Translate and accessibility features like Magnifier; or using Shortcuts for more options. A press-and-hold gesture with fine-tuned haptic feedback and visual cues in the Dynamic Island ensure the new button launches the intended action.

The iPhone 15 Pro battery capacity can enable up to 23 hours of video playback, up to 20 hours of streamed video playback and up to 75 hours of audio playback (similar to the iPhone 14 Pro). The iPhone 15 Pro Max battery can enable up to 29 hours of video playback, up to 25 hours of streamed video playback and up to 95 hours of audio playback (similar to the iPhone 14 Pro Max). We show the battery capacities for the iPhone 15 Pro as 3,650mAh (versus 3,200mAh for the iPhone 14 Pro) and for the iPhone 15 Pro Max we show 4,852mAh (versus 4,323mAh for the iPhone 14 Pro Max).

Although there was speculation that Apple would increase the price for the iPhone 15 Pro models, the prices for the iPhone 15 Pro are the same as when the iPhone 14 Pro launched. For the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple is no longer offering the 128GB storage option and the iPhone 15 Pro Max now starts with 256GB storage. The iPhone 15 Pro starts at $999, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max starts at $1199 with 256GB storage (the same price as the iPhone 14 Pro Max with 256GB storage.) These phones can be preordered starting from September 15th, with availability on September 22nd. Apple is offering up to a $1000 discount for an eligible iPhone (iPhone 11 or newer) trade in.

As we show in the Monthly Flagship Smartphone Tracker for the time period from June – August, iPhone 15 panel shipments are tracking 30% higher than iPhone 14 panel shipments during the same time period leading up to the launch. With the current mix of panel shipments for the iPhone 15 series, the Pro models are expected to account for 57% share versus 49% for the iPhone 14 Pro models during the June – August time period. In addition, as a result of the higher starting price for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, blended ASPs for the iPhone 15 series are tracking 5% higher versus the iPhone 14 series.
