Honor Raises the Bar for the Magic 6 Ultimate Edition – First Smartphone to Debut with Tandem OLED Stack
Honor is set to launch the Magic 6 Ultimate Edition and Magic 6 RSR today in China. Honor revealed in a Weibo post that the Magic 6 Ultimate Edition will use a dual-stack tandem OLED display that is claimed to increase the lifetime of the display by 600% and improve power efficiency by up to 40%. The Magic 6 Ultimate Edition is confirmed to launch with an "Honor Stacked Oasis Eye Protection Screen".
It is great to see that BOE is continuing to advance technologies by implementing a tandem OLED stack on a smartphone and this also highlights BOE’s continued drive to innovate. Our take is that tandem OLED stacks are better suited for IT applications where lifetime, power efficiency and brightness efficiency are more important given the amount of time people spend in front of a monitor, tablet and notebook PC. As Ross points out in his article this week, BOE will hold the groundbreaking ceremony for their upcoming B16 IT OLED fab with G8.7 substrates and an LTPO backplane on March 27th. In addition, as Ross points out in another article, LGD and SDC started shipping panels for the 11.1” and 12.9” iPad Pros which use tandem OLED stacks. Our supply chain sources have mentioned that the Honor Magic 6 Ultimate with tandem stacks could be more of a promotional product for BOE that highlights their capabilities prior to the start of mass production at the B16 OLED fab in 2026. Our supply chain sources also note that no other smartphone brand or panel supplier has smartphones with tandem OLED stacks on their roadmaps.
Honor had previously confirmed that the Magic 6 Ultimate Edition will be offered in Ink Rock Black and a Sky Purple color. The centrally placed rear camera module of the phone is visibly different in design from the other models in the lineup. The squarish shape is rounded at diagonally opposite corners. Three camera sensors alongside an elliptical flash unit are placed within the module.
Another post confirmed that the Honor Magic 6 Ultimate Edition will also have the Honor Diamond Rhino Glass protection that is said to be both scratch-resistant and drop-resistant. Meanwhile, both the Magic 6 Ultimate model and the Magic 6 RSR version (inspired by Porsche) are teased to get an SLR-level "super dynamic Eagle Eye camera," which is claimed to offer the world's LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) technology, for improved dynamic range with Honor quoting a 600% increase in dynamic range capabilities.
The Honor Magic 6 Ultimate is expected to use a 6.8” LTPO flexible OLED display from BOE with a resolution of 2800 x 1280, 120Hz refresh rate and use the 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. The OLED display is being made at BOE’s B7 Generation 6 fab. This smartphone is also expected to use a 5,600mAh battery with 80W wired and 66W wireless charging. For the camera configuration, the Honor Magic 6 Ultimate is expected to use a triple rear camera configuration with a 50MP ultrawide camera, a 50MP wide camera and a 180MP telephoto camera. The Magic 6 RSR will likely feature the same hardware but in a style inspired by Porsche.
As we show in the Quarterly Advanced IT Display Shipment and Technology Report and The Future of OLED Manufacturing report, tandem stacks has several benefits and challenges.
