Samsung Announces S25 Series: Seven Years of Upgrades, New On-device AI Features
Samsung announced the S25 series during the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event on January 22 (a few days later than when it announced the S24 series on January 17, 2024).
As expected, the S25 Ultra has a larger display size of 6.86” versus the S24 Ultra’s 6.79”. The display sizes for the S25 and S25+ models, at 6.16” and 6.66” respectively, have remained the same as the S24 and S24+. The peak outdoor brightness for all models remains at 2,000 nits. The S25 series is using the M13 OLED stack profile, which was also used on the S24 series. The light-emitting layer materials in the M13 OLED stack are supplied by companies including DuPont, UDC, DS Neolux, Samsung SDI, Merck and SFC. Specifically, DuPont, UDC and DS Neolux provide materials for the red spectrum, while Samsung SDI and Merck provide the materials for the green spectrum. SFC and Idemitsu Kosan provide materials for the blue spectrum.
All S25 models use the 3nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. The S25 Ultra has a titanium finish and new Corning cover glass that is named Corning Gorilla Armor 2. When the Gorilla Armor cover glass was introduced with the S24 Ultra, Corning stated that the cover glass reduced reflection by up to 75% and was 4x more scratch-resistant. For the new Armor 2 cover glass, the Samsung S25 Ultra has a ceramic version that can apparently survive head-high drops of 2.2 meters (7.2 feet). The S25 has a resolution of 2340 x 1080, the same as the S24. The S25+ and S25 Ultra have a resolution of 3120 x 1440, the same as the S24+ and S24 Ultra. The battery capacities have remained the same for the S25 series at 4,000 mAh and 4,900 mAh for the S25 and S25+. The battery capacity for the S24 Ultra has also remained the same at 5,000 mAh but with an increase to 25W of wireless charging from 15W in the S24 Ultra.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen Elite chipset for Galaxy improves CPU performance by 37%, NPU performance by 40% and GPU performance by 30%. Prior to the event, Qualcomm issued a press release noting, “We are thrilled to introduce the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, which represents a significant leap forward in mobile technology, offering more intelligent, customized experiences – from personalized AI assistants to exceptional AI-generated images. The collaboration between Qualcomm Technologies and Samsung has always been about pushing the boundaries of what's possible. With the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, we are not just enhancing performance, we are redefining the user experience by integrating cutting-edge on-device AI and connectivity features that will shape the future of mobile technology. The Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy is specially customized to meet the highest demands of the Galaxy S series, delivering superior capabilities in Galaxy AI, mobile gaming, camera, connectivity, and more. With this new platform, the Samsung Galaxy S25 series is set to provide a premium experience that truly distinguishes itself among other mobile AI experiences, changing the way people interact with their device and the world.”
TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, noted, “The greatest innovations are a reflection of their users, which is why we evolved Galaxy AI to help everyone interact with their devices more naturally and effortlessly while trusting that their privacy is secured. The Galaxy S25 series opens the door to an AI-integrated OS that fundamentally shifts how we use technology and how we live our lives.”
Some of the new AI features shown during the event included:
- Circle to Search: This feature was first announced for the S24 series. The user is able to circle or scribble an object within a social media post and the S24 series will overlay search results of that item on the social media post. In the S25 series, Circle to Search now quickly recognizes phone numbers, email addresses and URLs on your screen, letting a user call, email or visit a website with a single tap.
- Call Transcript and Drawing Assist: Calls are organized with Call Transcript and summarized. Writing Assist features such as summarizing content or automatically formatting notes can be enabled where texts can be selected, without needing to switch between applications. Drawing Assist unlocks fresh ways to bring ideas to life through combinations of sketches, text or image prompts.
- Personal Data Engine: In the era of AI, personalization goes hand-in-hand with privacy. This feature powers personalized AI features by safely analyzing the user data on-device to deliver highly tailored experiences that reflect the users’ preferences and usage patterns. These insights enable tailored experiences such as searching for an old photo in the Gallery using natural language or being guided through the day with Now Brief, which proactively offers suggestions accessible via Now Bar on the lock screen. All personalized data is kept private and secured by Knox Vault. The S25 series also introduces post-quantum cryptography, safeguarding personal data against emerging threats, which could increase as quantum computing evolves.
The S25 series comes with Android 15 and One UI 7. Samsung also announced a commitment of up to seven years of OS upgrades and security updates. The S25 series can be preordered as of January 22, with availability on February 7.
