Samsung launched the sixth generation of its Flip and Fold foldable smartphones this week in Paris, France. The new foldables feature some small but needed improvements, incorporate AI functionality and are priced $100 higher than the Flip 5 and Fold 5 devices. However, if you order them on Samsung’s website, they will double the storage which wipes out the price increase. The Flip 6 will surely be the best selling foldable in 2024 and the Fold 6 will likely be vying with the Huawei Mate 5 for the #2 best-selling model. The specifications for the Fold 5, Flip 5, Fold 6 and Flip 6 are shown below. Let’s start with the displays.

  • Displays and Batteries
    • The Fold 6 foldable display has grown from 7.56” to 7.61” and is now more square going from 10.8:9 to 10.5:9. This allows the cover display to get larger and wider. It is now 6.25” with a 22:9 aspect ratio vs. 6.19” with a 23:9 aspect ratio on the Fold 5, which was too tall. The Fold 6 main display got nearly 50% brighter going from 1750 to 2600 nits of peak brightness. The cover display actually became less bright, declining from 1750 to 1600 nits, but did get LTPO, which helps with efficiency, which is important since the battery capacity remained at 4400 mAh.
    • The Flip 6 foldable display remains at 6.7” with a 3.4” cover display. The resolution and aspect ratios remained the same as well. One big change is the brightness which more than doubled from 1200 to 2600 nits on the foldable display and by over 60% from 1600 to 2600 nits on the cover display. They did not emphasize the cover display much in the launch, but there are new smart reply suggestions when responding to messages from the cover screen as well as more options for widgets on the cover display and some new interactive wallpapers that respond to the movements of the phone. The battery capacity also got a nice boost from 3700 to 4000 nits and now features a vapor cooling chamber for the first time.
  • Processors
    • Both the Fold 6 and Flip 6 feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processors vs. the Gen 2 on the Flip 5 and Fold 5. Both chips are made at 4nm, but the Gen 3 is believed to offer a 25% -30% increase in CPU performance, a 25% - 35% improvement in GPU performance and a 40% increase in AI performance. The processors are specially tuned for Samsung.
  • Cameras
    • The Fold 6 camera is similar to the Fold 5 with a 50MP main camera and 10MP 3X telephoto. However, the 12MP ultrawide camera was updated with better low light performance. The selfie cameras remain the same as last year with 10MPs on the cover display and a 4MP under display camera on the foldable display.
    • The Flip 6 gets the same 50MP main camera as the Fold 6 and also gets a new ultrawide camera. So, the Flip 6 got improved rear cameras this year. It keeps the 10MP selfie camera though.
  • Form Factor and Durability
    • The Fold 6 thickness declined from 0.53” to 0.48” when folded and from 0.24” to 0.22” when unfolded. The weight declined from 253g to 239g.
    • The Flip 6 thickness remained constant at 0.59” when folded and 0.27” when unfolded. The weight also remained the same at 187g.
    • Both new phones are now rated to IP48 vs. IPX8 on last year’s models. This means the devices are protected from foreign objects of 1mm and greater.
    • A new dual rail hinge mechanism helps minimize crease visibility. Reviewers said it was harder to notice the crease, a nice improvement over last year’s models. We don’t believe these models feature UFG, a different thickness of the UTG, which increases durability further and is also said to minimize seam visibility. This improvement is expected in the Fold 6 Slim, which DSCC expects to start panel production in August.
  • Storage
    • The Fold 6 comes with 12GBs of RAM like the Fold 5, but the Flip 6 jumps to 12GBs from 8GBs on the Flip 5. If you order from Samsung.com, you can also double your storage at no additional cost.
  • AI
    • Both models will get the AI features launched with the S24 series, but Samsung claimed that the big screen on the Fold 6 is even better for using all its AI features. InSamsung emphasized the following AI features at launch:
      • Translation features: On the Z Fold 6, Samsung launched an “Interpreter” mode. This allows people to fold the phone halfway so they can use both the back and inside screens. If two people are conversing in different languages, the screen will translate the conversation in the language relevant to the person looking at the screen.
      • Live translate: Samsung introduced a feature earlier this year that live translates phone calls in its own phone app. Now, that feature is being extended to third-party apps such as WhatsApp.
      • Suggested replies: The Z Flip6 will suggest a reply based on a user’s style of writing messages without the need for a person to open their device and type a response.
      • Sketch to image: On the Fold 6, that allows AI to turn S Pen doodles into images.
      • Google Gemini support
      • Circle to Search
      • ProVisual Engine which offers a Photo Assist feature that helps create professional-grade content.
      • Photo Studio which provides different styles for portraits.
      • Etc.
  • Misc.
    • Both new foldables receive seven years of OS and security updates.
    • The Fold 6 is available in Silver Shadow, Pink and Navy color options but you can also opt for exclusive colors (Craft Black and Purity White) on Samsung.com.
    • The Flip 6 is available in Blue, Silver Shadow, Mint and Yellow with Crafted Black, Gold, Light Blue, Peach and White, available from Samsung.com.
    • Samsung is also giving away free Galaxy Z Flip 6 Olympic Edition smartphones to participants at the Olympics in Paris. They have to take a "victory selfie" once on the podium in return. Clever idea.
Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 Specifications vs. Previous Models

The Fold 6 and Flip 6 began panel production in April. We currently see April to August panel production at 2.3M for the Fold 6 and 5.3M for the Flip 6. Phone production started in June, and we see June to November production at 2.2M for the Fold 6 and 4.2M for the Flip 6. The Flip 6 numbers are bigger than the Flip 5 while the Fold 6 numbers are smaller than the Fold 5. Infolding models are still struggling to achieve big volumes given their high price and reduced portability.
